While traditional pieces are still hugely popular, adding a contemporary twist or taking inspiration form a past era is a top trend that both young and old adore. A true test of longevity, being re-invented for a new generation to enjoy is a great compliment to the quality of the original concept.
For leading contemporary furniture designer, Johnny Egg, the designs of the past provide endless inspiration. Talking about his latest creation, a mirrored cabinet with swivelling drawers, he explains, "Our lives are too busy to be bothered by fuss and clutter, so there's a great desire for designs that are beautiful, classic and functional. When I designed the Twisted unit, I looked back to the glamour of the Art Deco period and gave it a twist to bring it bang up to date."
Other classic furniture which has been given a contemporary treatment include the grand and ornate lines of four-poster beds and the adaptation of traditional headboard from velvet-upholstered pads to smooth and understated frames. Even once passé materials can be used to create a new and inspired look; the Palazzo T4 frost-blue chandelier, for example, is an imaginative design in that throw-back material, acrylic.
